Luka Plectrums: The Material Guide

Luka Plectrums: The Material Guide

At Luka Plectrum, I don’t just “make” picks; I engineer the point of contact between you and your instrument. Every material in my workshop is selected for its unique mechanical and acoustic properties.

The “Warm & Powerful” Spectrum

Best for: Taming harsh highs, Jazz, Blues, and adding “body” to your sound

  • Ultem (PEI) – The Warm Precision
Often misunderstood as bright, we have found that high-quality Ultem actually delivers a deep, warm, and saturated tone. Its density allows it to absorb harsh transients, resulting in a fat, rounded sound with incredible stiffness.
  • Polycarbonate – The Smooth Foundation
Similar in behavior to Ultem, Polycarbonate offers a clean, warm response. It is exceptionally impact-resistant and provides a smooth, “liquid” feel across the strings.
  • Micarta – The Vintage Soul
A composite laminate that mimics the feel of organic materials. It offers a “dry,” woody resonance with a textured grip that matures with age.
  • UHMWPE – The Silent Glide
The lowest friction coefficient in our arsenal. We use a specialized Thermal-Polishing technique to master this stubborn material, resulting in a buttery-smooth attack with zero pick-noise.

The “Bright & Articulate” Spectrum

Best for: Clarity, speed, Bluegrass, Metal, and cutting through a dense mix

  • Vespel® SP-1 – The Gold Standard
A premium aerospace polymer that defines high-end clarity. It is “Premium Bright”—crystalline, snappy, and incredibly articulate. It offers a natural grip that gets better as your fingers warm up.
  • PEEK – The Surgical Scalpel
One of the stiffest polymers available. It produces a high-pitched “chirp” and a laser-focused attack, making it the ultimate tool for technical shredding and precision.
  • Titanium Alloys – The Harmonic Shimmer
Lightweight, yet indestructible. Titanium offers a unique metallic resonance that isn’t harsh—it adds a sophisticated harmonic shimmer and infinite sustain to every note.

The “Balanced & Clear” Spectrum

Best for: Versatility, Studio work, and consistent response across all genres

  • Torlon® (PAI) – The Bone-Like Classic
One of the toughest engineering thermoplastics in existence. Torlon is highly prized by players for its organic, “vintage” response. It provides a tone very close to natural bone or tortoise shell—balanced, rich in harmonics, and remarkably consistent. It’s the perfect choice for those who need a pick that feels “alive” but offers modern durability.

The “Artistic & Experimental” Spectrum

  • Kirinite®
Where aesthetics meet functionality. Kirinite offers stunning, deep-swirled visuals with a high-polish finish that feels warm and “grippy” in the hand.
  • Aluminium & PEEK Hybrid (Experimental)
Our latest innovation. By combining a resonant aluminium core with a technical PEEK skin, we’ve created a pick with the sustain of metal and the lightning-fast release of a high-tech polymer.
  • Bakelite / Catalin (Heritage Series – Coming Soon)
A tribute to the origins of synthetic materials. Known for its unique vintage resonance and historic feel.

The Luka Plectrum “No-CNC” Guarantee

Unlike factory-made picks, every single edge on my website is hand-shaped and hand-polished. I don’t use CNC machines because they can’t feel the heat-build up of UHMWPE or the stubborn density of Ultem. When you buy a Luka Plectrum, you are buying a piece of luthier-grade engineering.
